SuperChamps – Round Two

Daytona Sandown Park

SuperChamps returned to Daytona Sandown Park for Round Two on the Alternate layout. A cold autumn morning greeted the drivers for the opening Heats, but the sun broke through before the Finals as competitors across all four classes fought back from difficult starting positions.

SODI Lightweight, Daniel Harman began the meeting with victory in Heat One, but Harry Banks ensured the result remained undecided until the line. Starting from P12, Banks charged through the field and finished only 0.076 seconds behind Harman. Tobias Robinson completed the podium just 0.227 seconds away from the winner. Banks continued his progress in Heat Two, climbing from P13 to take the lead and control the race. His advantage grew beyond 12 seconds before Tom Reed reduced the deficit during the closing stages, eventually finishing 9.464 seconds behind. The Final produced another reversal as Harman recovered from P8 to regain the front. Once in the lead, he pulled clear and secured victory by 11.985 seconds. Sarah Telford responded to an on track incident resulting in a collision during Heat One with an impressive drive from P6 to finish second. Banks delivered his third recovery of the meeting, rising from P14 to complete the podium. Robinson followed in fourth, with Tara Herm fifth.

Robin Malipatil established himself as the leading SODI Heavyweight by finishing ahead of Michael Herm in both Heats. Herm began the combined Final from overall pole position, while Malipatil started alongside him in P2. Despite the surrounding Lightweight traffic, Malipatil retained the Heavyweight advantage and finished tenth overall to secure the class victory. His 51.644 was also the fastest lap of the entire SODI Final, placing him ahead of every Lightweight and Heavyweight driver on outright pace. Herm finished 14th overall and secured second in class.

Ellis McKenzie delivered the first major recovery of the DMAX meeting in Heat One. Starting from P12, he climbed through the field to win by 2.135 seconds from Adam Palmer, with Thomas Williams third. McKenzie reinforced the result by setting the fastest lap with a 44.979. Heat Two produced a different winner as Nelson Taylor progressed from P7 to take victory. George Lawlor finished second and Jeremy Gong completed the podium, while Taylor recorded the race’s fastest lap with a 45.267. McKenzie faced an even greater challenge in the Final after starting from P21. He gained 20 positions to reach the front and claim his second victory of the meeting, but Taylor remained close throughout and crossed the line only 0.127 seconds behind. It was the narrowest winning margin of the day. Palmer recovered from P9 to complete the podium, while the progress continued further down the order. Fin Ions climbed from P20 to fourth and Isaac Burton advanced from P19 to fifth. Williams finished seventh but demonstrated his pace by recording the Final’s fastest lap with a 45.366.

Warren Gomm led the DMAX Heavyweight classification in Heat One before Charlie Foster took the class honours in Heat Two. Gomm continued to show strong pace in the Final and recorded a 45.796, but a jump-start penalty compromised his result. Foster capitalised to secure the Heavyweight victory, with Sam Roy finishing second. Gomm retained the final place on the podium after the penalty was applied, while James Jeram completed the leading four.

Daytona Milton Keynes

SuperChamps Season Two returned to Daytona Milton Keynes for Round Two, with the SODI and DMAX Lightweights and Heavyweights contesting two Heats before the Final determined the four class winners.

Jacob Heaver-Newton made the strongest start in Heat One, defeating Josh Tiller by just 0.2 seconds. Benjamin Barath completed the podium in third, finishing a further five seconds behind Tiller. Barath responded in Heat Two and claimed victory after one of the closest finishes of the meeting. He beat Tiller by only 0.1 seconds, while Daniel Zuleta crossed the line just 0.09 seconds behind the runner-up. Only 0.19 seconds covered the leading three. The Final confirmed Barath’s improvement across the round. After finishing third in Heat One and winning Heat Two, he secured the main victory by 2.3 seconds over Heaver-Newton. Tiller completed the podium a further five seconds behind, ending the meeting with three top-three finishes across the two Heats and Final.

Matt Friar established himself as the early SODI Heavyweight favourite with victory in Heat One. He finished three seconds ahead of Dominik Gulbis, while Ryan Hailey followed another six seconds behind in third. Friar strengthened his position in Heat Two by claiming a second consecutive victory. Hailey improved to second, finishing two seconds behind the winner, while Gulbis completed the podium in third. The Final brought a change at the front. Hailey overturned Friar’s earlier advantage and defeated the double Heat winner by just 0.2 seconds, denying him a clean sweep. Gulbis finished third to complete a consistent meeting in which he reached the podium in all three races.

Jacob Csepreghi controlled the opening DMAX Lightweight Heat and claimed victory by five seconds. Dominic Fleming finished second, while Charlie Csepreghi joined his brother on the podium in third. Heat Two produced a different winner as Daniel Jones finished 0.7 seconds ahead of Charlie Csepreghi. Oli Kite remained close behind and completed the podium a further 0.4 seconds back. The Csepreghi brothers moved to the head of the field in the Final and remained locked together until the chequered flag. Following a drag race to the line, Jacob defeated Charlie by just 0.02 seconds to claim his second victory of the meeting. Fleming completed the podium a further 0.3 seconds behind, leaving all three drivers closely grouped at the finish.

McKenzie Senior began a perfect DMAX Heavyweight meeting with victory in Heat One. He finished four seconds clear of David Celi, with Harry Thrower taking third. Senior maintained control in Heat Two and secured his second win, this time defeating Lee Witney by two seconds. Celi followed in third to claim another podium. The Final completed Senior’s clean sweep. He delivered his largest winning margin of the round, crossing the line five seconds ahead of Celi. Witney completed the Final podium in third, while Senior left Daytona Milton Keynes as the only driver to win both Heats and the Final.

Daytona Tamworth

SuperChamps returned to Daytona Tamworth for Round Two, where the new Island layout presented the drivers with a fresh challenge. Its fast bus-stop chicane added another technical element to the final sector, while the combined N35-ST and DMAX programme created a demanding morning of racing before the 15-minute Finals.

Jaysse Radu established himself as the leading N35-ST Lightweight across the two Heats, recording one victory and one second place. His principal challenge came from reigning N35-ST Heavyweight champion James Stevenson, who competed in the Lightweight class for the first time and took victory in Heat Two. Their results set up a direct contest between the pair in the Final. Stevenson completed a successful Lightweight debut by moving to the front and securing victory. Radu remained close throughout, however, and crossed the line only 1.373 seconds behind. The result placed Stevenson among the small group of drivers to have won SuperChamps races in both N35-ST weight classes. Melvin Pruden completed the podium in third after holding off Jayden Baker, who finished only a few tenths behind and narrowly missed out on the final trophy position.

The DMAX Lightweight Heats produced two different winners. Theo Laverty claimed Heat One but could not repeat the result in Heat Two, finishing fifth in a tightly grouped field just 2.596 seconds behind the winner. Harry Fitch took the Heat Two victory after experiencing a contrasting result in the opener. With Laverty and Fitch effectively matching one another across the two races, the Final remained open. Reigning champion Jake Garret recovered from an issue in Heat Two and a lower Final starting position to return to the front. He fought Leonidas Platanopoulos throughout the 15-minute race before securing victory by 1.808 seconds. Fitch completed the podium in third, holding off Reuben Potter by just 0.2 seconds after their own close contest for the final podium position.

Finlay Stewart and Keelan Arnold emerged as the leading DMAX Heavyweight contenders during the Heats, with Stuart Corr and Kieran Glover remaining within reach behind them. Arnold took control in the Final and converted his earlier pace into a 3.418-second victory. Corr recovered from a quieter set of Heats to finish second, but had to defend throughout the closing stages from Stewart. Only 0.242 seconds separated them at the chequered flag, leaving Stewart to complete the Heavyweight podium in third.

Steve Hannon qualified third in class with a 46.263, placing him fourth overall behind Heavyweight driver Warren Gomm. The race developed into the evening’s closest contest as Brown and Hannon fought for the lead. Hannon finished second, while Mike Bennett climbed from sixth to complete the podium, crossing the line a further 1.055 seconds behind. Jack Redfern led a closely matched DMAX Lightweight qualifying session with a 45.525. Jack Candasamy followed on a 45.667, while Lucas Payne qualified third with a 45.715. Redfern converted pole into victory across the 27-lap race, establishing a 6.318-second advantage by the chequered flag. Candasamy secured his second consecutive podium after claiming his first of Season Two at Round Four. He also recorded the race’s fastest lap with a 45.554, demonstrating the pace to challenge Redfern despite being unable to close the gap across the full distance. Matthew Richardson climbed from fourth in class to complete the podium. Alfie Pettengell produced a stronger recovery immediately behind, gaining three positions from seventh to fourth.

Warren Gomm produced one of the evening’s standout qualifying performances. His 45.759 placed him fourth overall and ahead of all but three Lightweight drivers, leaving him just 0.234 seconds away from Redfern’s outright pole time. Gomm carried that speed into the race and secured the Heavyweight victory while finishing ninth overall. His fastest lap of 45.611 was only 0.057 seconds slower than Candasamy’s outright race benchmark, underlining his competitiveness against the lighter drivers. Zack Llewellyn-Morris finished second in class, while Pawel Kamysz completed the Heavyweight podium. Tom Mansfield and Danny Hunn were both recorded as non-finishers.
