SuperChamps – Round Seven
Daytona Sandown Park
The penultimate round of SuperChamps took place under clear skies and warm conditions at Daytona Sandown Park, with temperatures sitting around 22°C throughout the morning. With the Grand Prix format in use, Qualifying set the grid for the Shootout Race, while the Shootout finishing positions determined the starting order for the all-important Feature Race.
Daniel Harman immediately established himself as the driver to beat by taking pole position in a highly competitive SODI Light field. Less than a second covered much of the front-running pack, with Caesar Chen, Sarah Telford, Sid Stubbings and Indy Welch all firmly in contention. Harman carried that form through the Shootout Race, securing victory and earning pole position for the Feature Race. Behind him, the order remained tightly contested as drivers fought to improve their starting positions for the final race of the day. One of the notable stories from the Shootout came from Frederic Navarro, whose race was compromised by a mechanical issue, leaving him with work to do later in the day. When the Feature Race began, Harman made full use of clear air at the front. While the battle behind him remained intense, he kept mistakes to a minimum and steadily extended his advantage to complete a dominant clean sweep of the day. Behind the winner, Caesar Chen delivered another strong performance to secure second place, while Indy Welch produced one of the standout drives of the round. After Qualifying fifth, Welch fought his way through the order to claim third and continue his strong championship form. The battle for the remaining top positions was electric. Navarro recovered impressively from his earlier troubles to finish fourth, narrowly ahead of Sarah Telford, Jake Panter and Sid Stubbings. Several drivers spent much of the race separated by only a few kart lengths, with positions changing repeatedly throughout the closing stages.
In the SODI Heavies, Harrison Fullerton-Craske and Pranav Yaliwal were closely matched from the opening session. Yaliwal came out on top in the Shootout Race, but Fullerton-Craske responded when it mattered most. A strong Feature Race performance allowed him to take the class victory, with Yaliwal finishing second and Michael Herm completing the podium after recovering from a DSQ in the Shootout.
The DMAX classes produced some of the closest racing of the day. Ellis McKenzie topped Qualifying in the Lights class and immediately looked comfortable at the front, but the margins behind him suggested the battle would be far from straightforward. Thomas Williams, James Lockhart, Adam Palmer, Fin Ions and James Callan were all within striking distance. McKenzie backed up his Qualifying pace by winning the Shootout Race, securing pole position for the Feature Race and putting himself in the strongest possible position heading into the final event. Once the Feature Race got underway, McKenzie controlled proceedings superbly. While the fight behind him remained fierce, he never looked to be under serious threat and completed a dominant lights-to-flag victory. The podium battle proved far less straightforward. James Callan continued to move forward throughout the day and secured an excellent second-place finish after starting outside the top three in Qualifying. Fin Ions also made progress to complete the podium, while James Lockhart and Adam Palmer remained involved in the fight throughout the race. Thomas Williams was one of the quickest drivers during the earlier sessions and finished second in the Shootout, but a more difficult Feature Race left him sixth at the flag despite showing strong pace all day.
The Heavyweight class delivered another competitive contest. Mikhail Sitnikov started the day fastest in Qualifying, but the Shootout Race saw William Tidnam and Alfie Shrubb move to the front. Their battle continued into the Feature Race, where Shrubb ultimately emerged victorious after a closely fought race. Tidnam finished second and Sitnikov completed the podium after remaining in contention from start to finish.
With close battles throughout the field, multiple podium fights going down to the final laps and strong performances across every class, Round Seven provided another crucial battle in the closing stages of the season.
Daytona Milton Keynes
Round Seven of the Daytona Milton Keynes SuperChamps season was held on the demanding Cliff Drop & Bus Stop layout, with valuable championship points on offer as the season continues to gather momentum into it’s final round.
The SODI Lightweights Qualifying session belonged to Lewis Bowey, who secured pole position ahead of Zachary Smith and Aston Tempany-McColm. Bowey converted that pace into victory in Race One, leading Smith and Tempany-McColm home. Further down the order, Daniel Zuleta and Benjamin Barath produced one of the closest battles of the race, separated by just 0.012 seconds at the chequered flag as they finished fifth and sixth respectively. Race Two once again saw Bowey prove untouchable in the SODI Lightweights, claiming a second victory of the day. Behind him, Tempany-McColm and Smith staged a thrilling fight for second place, with just 0.1 seconds separating the pair in a drag race to the finish line. Zuleta was again involved in one of the race’s standout battles, this time edging out Dominic Fleming by only 0.025 seconds.
The SODI Heavyweights saw Lee Robson top Qualifying ahead of Charlie Fenton and Harry Fenton. However, C. Fenton emerged victorious in Race One, crossing the line just 0.2 seconds ahead of Robson, while H. Fenton completed the podium. The SODI Heavyweights produced another closely fought contest in Race Two. C. Fenton completed a clean sweep of the day with a second victory, ahead of Robson and H. Fenton. The trio remained tightly matched throughout, finishing little more than a second apart.
In DMAX Lightweights, Harrison Line secured pole position ahead of Charlie Csepreghi and Jacob Csepreghi. Race One honours went to C. Csepreghi who led Freddie Burden and Dawid Sniezko home as the field became relatively spread out during the race. The deciding Race Two delivered a new winner, with Burden taking the victory ahead of Sniezko and Charley Murray. J. Csepreghi narrowly missed out on the podium in fourth after a strong performance.
The DMAX Heavyweights Qualifying session was topped by Peter Stockwin who was confident enough in his pace to return to the pits before the session had concluded. Stockwin maintained that form in Race One, taking victory ahead of Freddie Jenkins and Harry Thrower. Stockwin completed a dominant day in Race Two by repeating his earlier success. Jenkins and Thrower followed him home once again, with only three tenths of a second separating second and third place at the finish.
Attention now turns to Round Eight, where the championship battles will continue to intensify as the season enters its final instalment.
Daytona Tamworth
The weather was optimal ahead of the penultimate round of SuperChamps at Daytona Tamworth. With drivers arriving prepared for an out and out battle to try and edge forward in the standings ahead of the Final Round; we were set for a thoroughly entertaining event.
Harry Fitch comfortably won the first race of the day in the N35-ST Lights class, nearly eight seconds ahead of Leonidas Platanopoulos, clearly beginning as he meant to go on into the twenty-five-minute Feature Race. As for the Heavyweights, James Stevenson stood tall in the opening race, securing a dominant win ahead of Dylan Morrall.
In the Feature Race, both of our Shootout winners continued on their winning form. Fitch and Stevenson taking their class’s respective fastest laps to boot, in turn securing a the maximum sixty-one-point sweep of the round. Heading into the Final Round next month, these additional points will prove essential in their championship runs, a fantastic result for both. However, these wins didn’t come without challenge. Fitch’s competition was tough in the Feature. Platanopoulos, who secured back-to-back P2’s this round, was just over five seconds back over the chequered flag, applying consistent pressure throughout proceedings. They were joined on the podium by Noah Johnson. In the Heavyweights, the battle for second was hard-fought as Morrall bravely fought off Adam Brown. Brown equally had his hands full defending from a charging Anthony French, both of them under pressure from Caelan Wilson in P5.
In a story mirroring that of the N35-ST class, two dominant figures stood out in the DMAX Shootout. Jake Garret and Luke Mallard were victorious, both by margins north of five seconds.
Heading into the Feature Races, both drivers were victorious again, this time by even greater margins. A remarkable record to be held as well, with all four victors taking round sweeps, a particularly rare occurrence. Garret was joined on the podium by Reuben Potter, who has quickly acclimatised to the more powerful DMAX machinery after graduating from the N35-ST class at the start of the season. He was comfortably ahead of Harry Thomas, who found himself battling Kyle Scarrott for the majority of his race, just four tenths of a second separating them at the line. As for the Heavyweights, Finlay Stewart was ten seconds behind Mallard, managing to get himself seven seconds ahead of Stuart Corr.
