TEAM BRIT BEGIN THEIR JOURNEY IN THE BRITISH GT CHAMPIONSHIP
This past weekend, Bobby Trundley and Team Brit began their journey in the British GT Championship with Rounds 1 and 2 taking place at the Oulton Park International Circuit in Cheshire.
Bobby is the latest driver to come through Daytona’s ranks to race in an elite-level professional motorsport Championship. Notable past drivers have included ex-British Car Touring Champion, Rob Huff, and current Jaguar Racing Formula-E driver, Sam Bird.
Bobby lined up on the grid in Team Brit’s McLaren 570 GT4 alongside Aaron Morgan, his co-driver. Together they are competing in the Pro-Am category of the Championship. Bobby is classified as a silver driver (pro) and Aaron as a bronze driver (am). They will be racing together in what is considered by some to be the most prestigious and stylish sportscar grid of any national motorsport Championship in the world.
It’s a long way from Bobby’s introduction into motorsport which was attending Daytona’s Race School at Daytona Milton Keynes in 2010. After falling in love with kart racing and motorsport, Bobby developed his talent at all three of Daytona’s premier outdoor kart racing circuits and he competed in the Daytona DMAX Championships against some of the best kart racing drivers in the UK. He went on to become a five times DMAX champion between 2014 - 2018.
His latest accolade in motorsport is not his only achievement. Bobby is autistic and was non-verbal until age 11. He now speaks publicly about his disability. His co-driver Aaron also had the desire and willpower to not let his disability stop him from progressing through the motorsport ranks. He lost the use of his legs in an accident at age 15 and uses hand controls to drive the monster McLaren.
Together they lined up on the grid with the goal for the first race to learn, keep their noses clean (and race car!) and ensure the drivers picked up valuable experience. Their GT4 car was one of 13 others on the grid in the Pro-Am class.
In both races the drivers kept out of trouble and by the second race, they had already improved to finish ahead of some of the more experienced Silver/Silver driver pairings. In the Pro-Am class they finished second in class twice. Just reward for the drivers and team’s hard work over the winter.
The next instalment of the British GT Championship will take place at Silverstone on the 7th May 2022. We wish Bobby and Team Brit the very best of British throughout the season and we look forward to watching their progression as the season unfolds.
