Daytona CEO wins the Birkett for the second time

The biggest race of the year, the Birkett took place for the 70th time on the 23rd October on the Grand Prix Circuit at Silverstone.

Daytona entered a team which was led by Daytona CEO Charles Graham accompanied by Simon Freeman who started racing at our Milton Keynes circuit in the late 90’s and accompanied by Al Smart. Josh Smith of RJ Motorsport provided engineering for the Team and Alan Thompson was on strategy. The Birkett is a relay race which takes plave over 6 hours with teams fielding a number of cars which race in a relay. Team Daytona Fielded three Radicals.

Charles qualified second out of 70 teams/300 cars. Simon started for the Team and took P1 on the first lap. Simon held the lead and pitted after an hour. Charles then took over and ran for one hour and fifteen minutes when a gearbox gremlin caused an early pit stop. Charles was on the radio to his engineer Lewis richards (Daytona’s Group Head Of Engineering) advising that he was stuck in fourth gear. Luckily this happened on the Hamilton straight so Charles was able to coast in to the pits retaining P1.

The gearbox issue was terminal so Simon and Al had to finish the race and were pleased to tell you that the Team finished P1, a lap ahead and having completed 160 laps of the Grand Prix Circuit.  The team held fastest lap of the race with a 2:04:65.Daytona have fielded a team in the last 5 Birkett races, having achieved podiums in all races including a win in 2019.

Previous winners of the Birkett include actor Steve McQueen who raced the Birkett in 1965.

We look forward to defending the title in 2022.
